How We Review

Last updated: March 2026

Transparency matters to us. Here is exactly how we evaluate and recommend mold-related products, testing methods, and remediation approaches on Mold Action Plan.

Our Review Methodology

We use an eight-point evaluation framework for every product and service we review:

1. Aggregated Buyer Review Synthesis

We analyze patterns across 50-200+ verified buyer reviews from Amazon, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and specialty retailers. We identify recurring praise and complaint themes rather than relying on any single review. We never copy reviews verbatim.

2. Technical Specification Analysis

We cross-reference manufacturer claims against published specifications: CADR ratings for air purifiers, pint capacity for dehumidifiers, detection sensitivity for test kits, HEPA certification standards for vacuums, and safety ratings for PPE.

3. Price and Value Assessment

We calculate cost-per-use, compare against nearest alternatives, and track historical pricing to identify genuine deals versus inflated MSRPs.

4. Expert Opinion Aggregation

We reference published recommendations from certified mold inspectors (CMI), industrial hygienists (CIH), and environmental health professionals. We cite professional consensus from ACAC, AIHA, and IICRC sources.

5. Scientific Research Review

For health-related topics, we reference peer-reviewed studies from PubMed, EPA technical documents, and CDC guidance. We cite our sources and link to original research whenever possible.

6. Brand and Manufacturer Assessment

We evaluate manufacturer reputation, warranty terms (as a proxy for product confidence), return policy quality, customer service responsiveness, and relevant certifications.

7. Safety and Certification Verification

We verify that products meet claimed certifications: EPA registration for antimicrobials, NIOSH approval for respirators, UL listing for electrical products, and AHAM certification for air treatment devices.

8. Use-Case Matching

We match each product to specific scenarios: bathroom mold vs. basement mold, small area DIY vs. professional-grade tools, apartment renter constraints vs. homeowner solutions. Not every product is right for every situation, and we make that clear.

What We Don’t Do

In the interest of full transparency:

  • We do not independently purchase and test every product we review. Our evaluations are based on the methodology described above.
  • We do not accept payment from manufacturers for reviews or placement.
  • We do not allow affiliate relationships to influence our recommendations.
  • We do not guarantee results from any product or approach. Mold situations vary widely, and professional assessment is always recommended for significant contamination.
